Library
and information services
take
stock as NEETs hit record levels
Record
numbers of young people are now NEET: Not in education, employment
or training. Latest Government statistics in August show the number
of 18-24 year olds up by 100,000 compared with last year at 835,000.
There has also been a surge in unemployed 16-17 year old school
leavers considered NEET in the second quarter of 2009, with 14,000
more than last year and a total of 124,000. As the recession continues,
so the need is urgent for service providers – especially libraries
– to address the needs of these disadvantaged young people.
CILIP's
second NEETs Briefing will tackle LIS initiatives with young people
as well as future roles for LIS in working with them. Its programme
will aim to clarify the thinking of Government Departments and agencies
to NEETs and explain the implications of this for public sector
funding. It will also raise awareness of NEET challenges and the
partnerships development process as well as developing recommendations
for LIS in supporting NEETs.

Expert
speakers will also explores the role
that ‘alternative providers' such as library and information services
have in engaging young people. The programme
will focus on repositioning services and resources in light
of the UK economic recession and the particular set of demands this
brings in providing for disengaged and hard-to-reach groups.
Speakers
at the event will explore:
- How
best to stimulate a culture change which enables all young people,
and encourages involvement;
- Changing
preconceptions of young people and of libraries through partnership;
- Demonstrating
youth involvement through creativity, digital and volunteering
opportunities.
