RDA
Briefing planned for 2010
CILIP
is planning a new event on RDA: Resource Description and Access,
which will mark the biggest change in bibliographic database management
since the introduction of MARC21 ten years ago. Managers will have
to make key decisions in the lead up to the implementation, and
CILIP will provide a forum for discussion and debate on the key
issues with a panel of expert speakers
Originally scheduled for autumn 2009, the Briefing is being postponed
until 2010 because of unexpected delays in developing the new RDA
standard. Once it is clear when the standard is to be introduced
a new date will be announced. Meanwhile you can register
your interest for the event and be informed when it is time to go
ahead.
RDA is seen as the new standard for resource description and access
designed for the digital world, and it is being built on the foundations
established by AACR2. It will provide a comprehensive set of guidelines
and instructions on resource description and access covering all
types of content and media.
Meeting
the challenges of strategic change
The
need to tackle the challenges presented by this major strategic
change has promoted CILIP to secure leading experts
from across the library and information community to develop this
Executive Briefing.
The
Briefing will provide an overview of the new cataloguing
code and its implications, and highlight the issues that really
matter to those working at a strategic level. Keynote
speakers include Alan Danskin, Manager
of Data Quality at the British Library, who will provide insight
into the BL's rationale for planning its own move, and Ann Chapman,
Research Officer at UKLON and Chair of the CILIP-BL Committee on
RDA, who will speak on how we got from ACCR2 to here.
Other
speakers will consider why the international
cataloguing standards are changing, and address staffing and staff
training implications including the bottom-line costs of adopting
RDA - or failing to adopt it.
