CATHERINE
COOKE WINS THE
RFID
INNOVATION AWARD
Winner
of this year's BIC/CILIP RFID in Libraries Group Innovation
Award 2009 is Catherine Cooke, Projects
and Development Coordinator at Westminster Libraries. She
will be presented with the Award at CILIP's RFID
in Libraries conference at Kings Place, London
on 10 November.
The
nomination states that Catherine has been pioneering the combination
of evidence-based stock management and the use of RFID handheld
readers in Westminster Libraries. Since piloting this solution,
Westminster has been able to produce an inventory for over
1,500 book titles an hour; perform a complete search for missing
items within a large library in less than five hours; and
dramatically improve the quality of the library catalogue
to improve user services.
With
technology employed by Intellident RFID handheld terminals
and SmartSM software to extract the library management data,
Westminster now plans to roll out handheld terminals across
its 11 libraries, five of which are already fully RFID self-service
enabled. They will also undertake an annual title inventory
for every library and commence searching via handheld
terminals for reserved items, missing items and items “lost
in transit”.
The
eight nominations for the Innovation Award were judged by
the group's board, and further details will appear in the
23 October issue of CILIP's Gazette magazine, which
will also feature a Conference Preview.
Cornwall
County Council was presented with the Award at the 2008 Conference
for its implementation of 37 RFID units across 19 libraries.
