Peter Birk

Biography - The Public Library in Silkeborg, Denmark, has in cooperation with private companies developed a self service system for all types of materials with RFID.  The system is simple, effective and cheap.  90% of the loans is now self service.

The system is implemented in 26 other libraries in Denmark and Silkeborg public library now has started developing the system to expand the opening hours of small libraries - without more staff.

Silkeborg Public Library has been one of the leading Danish libraries developing it-technology since 1990.  It was the first using an industrial robot for sorting materials, and the first one with RFID technology.  The library has developed several netservices, some of which are now national services.  Its homepage is twice pronounced as the best public homepage in Denmark.  Peter Birk has been the Director of the library for the past 20 years.
