Library and information work as a second career

If you have been working in another discipline you can use your training, qualifications and experience to make a start in library and information work.

The first step is to gain experience.  This can be done as a CILIP Graduate Trainee or in any assistant post.

In your applications your background in retail, office work, catering, teaching or commanding a battalion can bring many transferable skills. Highlight these.  Also having chosen this profession shows your commitment to libraries and information, make sure your potential employer recognizes this.

Once you are working you can look at the training available to library and information assistants and the CILIP accredited qualifications.
