Affiliate

Category of CILIP membership for administrative assistant, clerical or staff within libraries or information services

Archivist

Information professional whose role is to establish and maintain control of records/documents that are judged to have permanent value

Assistant librarian

Professional librarian with specific duties who reports to a Chief Librarian or Director of Information Services

Cataloguing

Describing documents according to an agreed set of bibliographic rules

Chartered librarian or information professional

An information professional who has:

  • Successfully completed a CILIP approved qualification
  • Undergone a rigorous personal and professional development programme after qualification
  • Made a submission to CILIP, which demonstrates the development of their professional skills and competence, critical awareness, and a sense of maturity in practice

Classification

The process of both deciding on the subject content of an item and allocation of appropriate number or code from a classification scheme

Collection management

Selection, acquisition, management and exploitation of resources within a library or information service

Customer service

Activities in a library or information service which are focussed on the needs of users, clients or customers

Indexing

Scanning a document and devising suitable subject headings to express the concept in the text concisely

Information literacy

The ability to recognise the need for information and then be able to locate, evaluate and effectively use the information found

Information management

The systematic organisation of information and data for storage, retrieval and transfer to users

Information officer

Information professional responsible for the development and management of information resources and provision of information to clients

Information professional

Generic term for anyone suitably qualified (or in the process of qualifying) who works in any sector of the information domain

Information resources

Generic term for data, records, text, multimedia and information technolog

Information science

Scholarly study, research and theory devoted to evaluating the characteristics and processes of information systems, information retrieval, information-seeking behaviours and human-computer interface

Knowledge manager

Information professional who manages information-based collaboration among sections/units within an organisation

Librarian

Generic title used to describe professional librarians of all grades. Normally someone holding an educational qualification and/or professional qualification in library and information management. Other job titles may include Information Manager and Learning Resource Centre Manager

Library

A collection of information resources organised for the benefit of a specific user group or community

Metadata

Factual information used to aid the identification, description and location usually of networked electronic resources

Para-professional

Assistant, clerical or administrative staff within libraries or information services

Qualified library or information professional

An information professional who has successfully completed a CILIP approved qualification

Records manager

Manager of information within an organisation; someone concerned with the life cycle of records
