A key role of CILIP is to accredit undergraduate, postgraduate and masters degree courses in the UK in library and information management and related subject disciplines. It also awards internationally recognised professional qualifications to its personal members.

Under the terms of its Royal Charter, CILIP has a duty to promote high quality library and information services and to advise government, employers and others on all aspects of library and information provision.

Membership of CILIP enables library and information professionals to manage their careers through initial education and training, continuing professional development and by becoming involved in communities of practice.
