The recommended salaries quoted are minimum guideline figures for the state sector*, and do not represent any particular salary scale or the sums paid by any particular institution.
Posts in some areas may be graded to recognise local labour market conditions. However, CILIP recommends that all posts should be graded according to the level of responsibility they bear and the level of qualification, skill and experience required.
Posts requiring the employment of a Chartered Librarian should be graded to provide a salary of no less than £23500.
The salary bands do not take into account special allowances such as London Weighting or other benefits, they are worked out on a 35 hour week.
*The School Libraries Group is curently compiling guidelines for non State schools. These will be published shortly.

CILIP recommends that school librarians have a status, salary and conditions of service on a par with senior colleagues within the institution with equivalent responsibilities. This would normally be at least at Head of Department level, although salaries will vary depending on managerial role, experience and the sector worked in.
The CILIP website contains a number of resources for use in pay negotiations that can help school librarians demonstrate their worth and achieve a salary that properly reflects the contribution they make.
If CILIP members require further guidance on salaries in the sector please contact the Information and Advice Team at info@cilip.org.uk or tel. 020 7255 0620.
These figures have been produced by the CILIP Information and Advice Team and SLG (The School Libraries Group) September 2010.
