Qualifications from overseas

Graduate level qualifications from the USA, Canada, Australia and the EU member states are accepted in the UK. Other qualifications will have to be individually checked by CILIP.

CILIP's recriprocal agreement (pdf 139kb) with the Library Association of New Zealand allows Chartered members of CILIP who are also members of LIANZA to use the postnominal letters RLIANZA.  Likewise, all LIANZA members who have achieved RLIANZA will be entitled to the use of the post nominal letters MCLIP if they join/re-join CILIP.  This will apply regardless of whereabouts in the world that they work.

Also CILIP has a reciprocal agreement with the American Library Association (ALA) and the Australian Library and Information Association which means academic qualifications accredited by those bodies are accepted in the UK. This allows graduates holding American, Canadian and Australian Bachelors and Masters degrees and Graduate or Postgraduate Diplomas in library and information studies to apply for posts asking for qualified librarians and information professionals in the UK.

Library and information qualifications from EU member states are also accepted in the UK for employment purposes, provided they have been assessed as being at UK degree level or equivalent.

Other qualifications are individually checked with UK NARIC and inquirers should contact us at the Qualifications section at CILIP.

All inquirers listed above and those whose overseas qualifications are accepted by CILIP are eligible to register to Charter with CILIP under Pathway 2.
