Introduction to Revalidation

Revalidation is open to all Chartered Members and Fellows who wish to gain evidence and recognition of the commitment to personal professional development.

A certificate is awarded on successful completion of each three-year cycle. Your portfolio is an evaluative review of your professional development meeting CILIP's criteria of assessment.

Read the Qualifications Blog and follow Qualifications on Twitter. You can contact the Qualifications and Professional Development team on 020 7255 0610 or quals@cilip.org.uk

"When I Chartered I was in the public library sector. Now I work in the academic sector in the more specialised field of art and design librarianship.

The Revalidation process enabled me to really reflect on how much I have developed in my role. It has also disciplined me in terms of recording my own professional development, which means I am much more prepared when asked for this sort of information."

Binding your portfolio

Do use comb binding or similar. It makes your portfolio compact so it's easier and cheaper to send. Also it's flexible so while being secure it still allows you to make last minutes changes.

Do not use ring binders or lever arch files. They are less secure and more expensive to send by post.

Do not use plastic pockets for your pages. They aren't easy to read and do not photocopy well.

Do consider submitting electronically following these guidelines.

Can I see an example portfolio?

You can view some Revalidation portfolios in the secure part of the CILIP website. You'll need to sign in or register.

Also we send out copies to Candidate Support Officers who bring them to portfolio building courses and can lend them to candidates

Building your portfolio by Margaret Watson draws on reflections and real examples from successful candidates to offer practical advice.

Did you know?

You can apply for Revalidation if you have been on a career break to show you have been maintaining your professional development. The three year cycle does not have to include full time employment as long as you have been in Membership for three years, have some professional level experience to draw upon and can meet the criteria demonstrating your reflection.
