As Clinical Librarian at University Hospitals of Leicester Pip Rimmington works with health professionals in the areas of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Pain Management, Gastroenterology, Stroke and Surgical Services. She attends ward rounds, outpatient clinics and clinical meetings. Her literature searches provide evidence to help all members of the clinical team decide on treatment options.
In 2000 I graduated with a BA in Theology from Nottingham University. My careers adviser told me about the graduate trainee opportunities advertised by the Library Association (unified with the Institute of Information Scientists in 2002 to form CILIP).
I was offered the post of Graduate Library Assistant (Trainee) at the University of Wales and went on to study at Loughborough University. While discussing dissertation topics with fellow students on the MA in Information and Library Studies I first heard about Clinical Librarianship.
Once qualified, I practised in National Health Service libraries specialising in literature searching and subsequently setting up a clinical librarian service at George Eliot Hospital. I went on to take up the post of Clinical Librarian at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and took the lead in organising a national study day for UK Clinical Librarians on the subject of peer support.
I’m committed to continued professional development, successfully Chartering with CILIP in 2004. I am undertaking an MSc in Health Services Research at the University of Leicester.
