EPO Survey on search strategies

The EPO is investigating how and to which extent search reports can be complemented with information about the search performed by the office.

In this context, the EPO has launched a pilot programme on 1 November 2015 to learn what information is useful for patent information users. Upon publication of a search report, an information sheet is made available to the public via file inspection in the European Patent Register (“All documents”). The information sheet contains details about the databases in which the prior art was searched, the classification symbols defining the extent of the search as well as the keywords used and other elements.

The pilot programme aims at testing whether the information sheet provided on search strategies fulfils the user needs. It is intended to conclude by the end of 2016 and be evaluated for further extension or full implementation, considering the patent information users’ feedback.

The EPO would like to encourage SACEPO/PDI members to make their voice heard and to participate in the attached survey, helping the EPO to better tailor the planned information service to the user needs.

Would you please share the attached questionnaire within your group and send the answers directly to the coordinator of the SACEPO/PDI members who will collect and pass them to the EPO: peter.kallas@basf.com cc. bettina.rummel@basf.com
