We have categories of membership suitable for everyone working with knowledge, information or in libraries, and for institutions and companies working in the sector.


Affiliated Membership - Affiliated membership is open to anyone working in a post within a library or information service that does not require professional qualifications – typically those working as information or library assistants. Affiliated members can apply for our new Certification qualification which will entitle them to use the letters ACLIP after their name.

Student Membership – Open to people in full or part-time education on an accredited course in library and information science in the UK, and graduate trainees on pre-postgraduate experience.

Associate Membership – To be eligible for Associate membership you need to have an information or library qualification accredited by CILIP, or another academic qualification coupled with a period of work experience at a professional level. Associate members are eligible to apply for Chartered membership.

Chartered Membership (MCLIP) – To become a Chartered Member you need to successfully complete a portfolio of professional development, which evidences your experience and skills. Chartered Membership is considered the ‘gold standard’ for library and information professionals.

Chartered Fellowship (FCLIP) – To become a Chartered Fellow you need to demonstrate that as a Chartered Member you have continued your professional development for a period of time (usually at least 6 years) and that you have made a significant contribution to all or part of the profession.

Organisation Membership - Library and information services in the UK and overseas can join CILIP as organisation members. Organisation members nominate up to 3 representatives who receive benefits on behalf of the organisation. Benefits of Organisation Membership.

Overseas Membership – Individuals resident outside the UK, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands can join as Overseas members.

Honorary Fellowship (Hon FCLIP) – Is awarded by CILIP Council to individuals who have have rendered distinguished service in promoting the objects of the Institute. Nominations may be made by members, Branches, Groups, or committees and sub committees of Council.
