These terms can be confusing so we have developed some definitions to clarify their meaning.

Membership renewal
A CILIP membership lasts for 12 months. At the end of this period it becomes due for renewal and we ask the member to continue their membership by paying for a further 12-month period.

Under new regulations, agreed at the AGM in October 2007, members have 60 days in which to renew their membership subscription. If they don’t pay during this period their membership will be suspended and they will stop receiving CILIP services such as publications.

If they haven’t paid within a further 60-day period we will ‘lapse’ their membership and they will no longer be able to use the postnominals ACLIP, MCLIP or FCLIP. Members are still able to renew their subscription, but they will be liable to pay the full value of the membership subscription for that year. They will regain their entitlement to use their postnominals but they won’t be entitled to receive the publications they missed during the time their subscription was unpaid, or be eligible to vote during the remainder of that 12 month membership period i.e. until their subscription becomes due for renewal again and is paid.

Membership reinstatement
A member reinstates their membership when they rejoin CILIP after a period of absence. This period must be at least a year from the date that the subscription for their last CILIP membership became due. If it is less than a year they have the option to renew their membership (see above).

A reinstating member will start their membership on the date they re-join. This membership will last for 12 months before being due for renewal in the normal way. If they have a CILIP qualification they are entitled to re-start using their postnominals.
