Why do most personal members now pay a flat rate of £177?

From 1 January 2009 Associate members earning over £17,000 a year will pay a flat rate of £177.

Moving to a flat fee was originally agreed by the membership in a postal ballot four years ago with the aim of introducing an equal rate for equal service.

A range of lower rates still apply to those earning less than £17,000 a year, student, unwaged, retired and overseas members.
