If you don’t have an accredited qualification but have experience of working with knowledge, information or in a library, there are two categories of CILIP membership, which may be appropriate for you.

Which category you choose is dependent on the amount of experience you have, and the level of responsibility you have in your current role.

Experienced practitioners working in professional or managerial roles should join as Associate members, which means that they will be eligible for Chartership.

Less experienced practitioners, and those working in para-professional or administrative roles should join as Affiliate members, which means that they will be eligible for Certification.

If you're still uncertain about which category to join, take a look at our check list of responsibilities for professional and para-professional roles. If your current responsibilities fall mainly on the professional side you should join as an Associate.  If they fall mainly on the para-professional side you should join as an Affiliate.

Both Associates and Affiliates are entitled to the full range of CILIP services and benefits. There is also a progression route from Affiliate to Associate membership for Affiliates who complete our Certification qualification.
