Digital Challenges Facing Libraries

The migration of content into the digital space is having a direct impact on all sections of the library community. One key development is the increasing purchase and use of ebooks by public and academic librarians, and the particular challenges they pose both for them and their customers. To explore the problems and opportunities ebooks present, CILIP will present a one-hour seminar titled Digital Challenges Facing Libraries at 11.30am on Tuesday 20 April in Conference Room 3 at Earls Court 1 during the London Book Fair. Attendance is free to exhibition visitors.

Two expert speakers will make presentations and then the issues raised will be debated in a moderated Open Forum session. Firstly Martin Palmer, Principal Officer for Essex County Council's Libraries, will look at eBooks in public libraries with a Case Study based on his experience of introducing ebooks to Essex CC’s library service. Essex County Council has led the way in providing ebooks to the public and now has hundreds available for users to download in a number of formats for use on iPods, Sony readers and Windows Mobile devices as well as personal computers and laptops.

He will be followed by Hazel Woodward, University Librarian and Director of the University Press, Cranfield University, who will provide The academic librarian’s perspective of the future for ebooks. Hazel was previously as Head of Electronic Information Services at Loughborough University. She is currently the Chair of the JISC Journals Working Group, and a member of the JISC E-Books Working Group as well as contributing to various SCONUL, UKSG and ICOLC committees.

Chairing the session and moderating the debate will be Nick Poole, Chief Executive of the Collections Trust, an independent UK charity working with libraries, archives and museums, and a CILIP trustee.  He represents the UK at the Member States Expert Group for Digitisation at the European Commission and is responsible for advising a number of European agencies and Governments on digital priorities in Culture and libraries.  Prior to joining the Collections Trust, he held a number of roles at the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

CILIP has once again secured free entry to the London Book Fair for members, and online registration is available via the CILIP website.

In addition, CILIP’s Facet Publishing will showcase its expanding range of more than 200 titles on stand N615. Subjects published range from copyright and legal issues, e-books and acquisitions to mobile technologies and libraries. Visitors can browse titles and pick up a personal copy of the new 2010 catalogue.
