Background to the definition
In 2003 the Information Literacy Executive, chaired by Sheila Corrall (CILIP President 2002-2003), met to agree a definition of information literacy for use by CILIP members.
The group explored the work of CILIP's advisory groups on National Information Policy and the Knowledge Economy and SCONUL's task force on information skills, 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom'.
The definition developed by the group was approved by CILIP Council in December 2004 as CILIP's definition on information literacy.
