Phil Bradley trawls the internet to find the answers to this month's readers' queries.

This article is from the July 2003 issue of Update.

I am looking for information on a Danish musical comedy star
and circus performer in the early 1900s by the name of Ingeborg
Bruhn-Bertelsen. Do you have any ideas where I might look?

A search on Google for Bruhn-Bertelsen found one site (www.filmidanmark.dk/spillefilm/cirkus_revyen.htm)
that looks like it might have something useful, but since I don't
speak Danish I couldn't tell. You might also want to take a look
at:www.circusland.com/
which is a general circus site, but it does have a forum that you
may be able to post your query to. Another possibility is www.cirkus-dk.dk/htm/families.htm
though that page didn't want to load when I tried it. Finally, you
could try the Circus Record and Documentation Center website (www.circusnet.info/cirque/indexe.htm).
Hopefully one of those should be able to help.

Can you help me to find websites secure for children 10-14 to
access pen pals information/emails. I have been asked for this and
haven't managed to find anything but chat rooms and insecure email
details so thought I would try you!

You can find what seems to be a good listing at KidsClick! (http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/searchkids.pl?searchtype=all&keywords=pen+pals+or+key-pals&title=Pen+Pals)
which is a websearch for kids by librarians, so I would assume that
the links have all been checked, though of course it's sensible
to cast your own eye over them as well. Another possibility is the
list from Yahooligans (http://search.yahooligans.com/search/ligans?p=pen+pals).
There's also a small list of resources from Ask Eric http://askeric.org/cgi-bin/print.cgi/Resources/Subjects/Integrated_
Interdisciplinary_Approach/Keypals--Penpals.html [dead link 20 April 2005].
As with any site detailing information on, about or for children
it's always sensible to be cautious, so check, check and then check
once more!

I'm sure that you've been asked about this before, since you've
got some references on your own site, but do you know of a good
search engine that I could use to get images?

There's a new site (I'm presuming it's a new site since I've not
seen it before) which is a multi-search engine of image search engines
called Fagan Finder (www.faganfinder.com).
I've briefly had a look at it and am impressed Ð it brings together
the search function boxes for more than 90 image engines, divided
by type such as 'Cultural and historical', 'Educational images',
'Clip art' and 'Stock photos'.

Site of the month

My website this month is for a relatively new browser called Firebird
(www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/).
Does the world need a new browser? I'm not entirely sure that it
does, but then Microsoft does need competition, and I think it is
likely to get it from this browser. It's small, neat, fast and has
one or two nice features, such as multiple home pages. It's quick
to download, so if you don't like it, you don't have to use it,
but I think it's at least worthy of a quick peek.
