Introduction
Certification, the CILIP para-professional award, was introduced in April 2005.  It recognises the contribution made in library and information work by para-professionals. Applicants for Certification must be in membership of CILIP, normally as Affiliated Members although some applicants are Associate Members.  They must have been working in library and information work for two years (full-time equivalent) or longer.

Successful applicants are admitted to the Register of Certified Affiliates and awarded the postnominal letters, ACLIP.  This stands for Certified Affiliate of CILIP (CILIP Byelaws, Section 3, Professional Qualifications, No. 16) which holders are entitled to use while they remain in membership of CILIP.

A Certified Affiliate with a minimum of two years' relevant post-Certification experience and development can submit an application for Chartership.

Single category scheme January 2009 onwards
From 2005 - 2008 there were two categories of application for Certification: Category 1 for those with five years or more (full-time equivalent) experience and Category 2 for this with between two and five years (full-time equivalent) experience.  Category 1 ceased completely on 31 December 2008.  Candidates registered for and wishing to submit under Category 2 can do so up to 31 July 2009 after which Category 2 will cease completely.  For information on Category 2 please refer to the Certification Handbook.

From January 2009 all registrations for Certification must be under the single category scheme.  Details are given in the following link:
