CILIP Graduate traineeships guidance for employers
a) Ensure the one year nature of the contract is clearly stated in advert, further particulars, interview and any follow-up info given through the year. Never indicate that the contract has any chance of renewal.
b) Define the purpose of the contract at the start - i.e. gaining one year's pre-library school experience
c) A couple of months before the contract end date, alert the trainees to the forthcoming end of contract (usually that will be before the outcome of AHRC funding is known) and offer them the chance to discuss with a senior manager if they wish to stay on. Any decision can be taken to appeal.
d) Should any trainee wish to remain, advise them that they will be alerted to any suitable vacancies - if they arise (there is no obligation to appoint them to such without a competitive appointment process). This will include any redeployment possibilities as per any redundancy.
