Every professional organisation needs a knowledge base. This describes what members of the profession must know in order to practise. This document has been adopted by CILIP and establishes the unique knowledge, which distinguishes library and information professionals from other professionals.
CILIP refers to the knowledge base as the Body of Professional Knowledge (BPK).
