Certification, Chartership and Revalidation Support

A Chartership Reader

The original edition was published by the Group in May 2000 and was a compilation of articles that have appeared in the professional press on all aspects of the chartering process.

A new edition of the Chartership Reader has now been compiled (2004) and is available free of charge here to download.

The new edition is in PDF format; you will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the articles. The Reader is also free and is available to download from

Candidate Support Officers (CSO) Network

As the Group especially committed to involving and supporting newer entrants to the library and information profession, it is recognised that those preparing for certification, chartership and revalidation need special assistance. Courses on professional development are held frequently across the country, and a network of local Candidate Support Officers is available to give support and advice, in total confidence, where necessary.

Each Division appoints a Candidate Support Officer who is responsible for providing help and support for those working towards chartered membership status of CILIP. The service is available to all registration candidates whether or not they are members of the Career Development Group. The CSO network is probably the first point of contact for many Career Development Group members with their local Division. The CSO network is overseen by the National Learning Co-ordinator.

Time for Reflection: the Associateship Experience

This article by Nick Lewis appeared in July 2000 issue of Impact and provides some very useful insights for anybody preparing an application for Chartered status membership of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

The lis-cilip-reg mailing list is a Jiscmail list for academic librarians working towards chartered membership status of CILIP: Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals. It provides list members with the opportunity to discuss professional issues with like minded information professionals in all sectors; wide ranging professional awareness being vital for all charter candidates. Lesha Fossey and Rowena Macrae-Gibson, co-owners of the lis-cilip-reg mailing list have provided a useful introduction on how the discussion list came into being and current membership and usage.

There are also mailing lists that all Certification and Revalidation candidates are welcome to join, to discuss ideas and issues. For details of how to join, and to look at the archives, visit the following links:
