Northern Ireland Division

The Division covers the whole of Northern Ireland and represents members from a wide range of library and information services.

Committee meetings are held regularly throughout the year and provide members with opportunities for professional development. Current Committee Members are from Public, Government, Academic and Special libraries. If you would like to attend one of our meetings or if you would like to join the committee, contact the Divisional Secretary.

We run a programme of continuing professional development events during the year and we are always interested to hear from anyone with an idea for a course or visit.

The Career Development Group NI division works with CILIP to provide support for people in Ireland who are interested in becoming chartered members. If you are thinking about chartering, please contact the Candidate Support Officer, whose contact details are below.

LINK is our divisional newsletter and it is sent out three times a year to members and other interested parties. In line with the aims of the Group, the newsletter provides information about issues relevant to the local library and information community. Contributions to LINK are actively encouraged and provide people with an opportunity to contribute to the professional literature.

As a result of a project undertaken within the local division, we have been able to provide for your use a gateway to local LIS information. We hope you find this beneficial.

LINK Issue 108 Summer 2008

Editorial

Welcome to the summer issue of LINK and we have an interesting selection of articles for you in this edition. We begin with a report on the CILIP Ireland Members’ Day where Heather Anderson gives us her impressions of her first attendance at such an event.

A competency based selection workshop followed the Members’ Day proceedings and Stephanie McLaughlin relays some very useful tips on preparing for job interviews.

Next, Monica McErlane, a regular contributor to LINK over recent years, tells us about NIPR’s role in a new booklet designed to help all those who are interested in getting their work published.

Copyright issues, which affect all who work in information provision, are addressed by a report on the Copyright Awareness Seminar held in the Linen Hall Library earlier this year. Read about Roger Dixon’s entertaining and informative talk on this topic.

The July/August edition of Update also includes an article which outlines a draft European Commission directive to extend copyright in sound recordings from 50 to 95 years. You can find the full report on page 18.

Don’t forget that CILIP members can log on to the CILIP website (http://www.cilip.org.uk/default.cilip) and gain free access to a range of Emerald LIS journal articles. The most recent issue of Library Hi Tech (vol. 26, no. 2, pp 325-332) contains an article about “gray copyright” issues which describes those “situations in which the practical degree of copyright protection can best be measured in shades of risk rather than in simple terms of black and white”.

The Career Development Group has organised a visit to the new Learning Resource Centre at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. See the Stop Press section on page 5 for details.

Our job profile for this edition features Patricia Saunders, Head of Member, Customer and Support Services at the Linen Hall Library. Patricia gives us a fascinating insight into her important role at Ireland’s last subscribing library. Her duties can encompass anything from organising library merchandise to overseeing the first wedding held in the library!

Finally, read about the recent CDG organised visit to Lisburn City Library. A big thank you to Margaret Bell, Group Librarian and her team for facilitating this very enjoyable and informative afternoon.
