Student Zone - Career Development Group

Student Zone of the Career Development Group, with information on gaining qualifications, the Student Conference, activities and becoming a Student Representative.

Student Conference

The Career Development Group offers special activities for students, including the twice-yearly Student Conference.  The most recent student conference was held in 2007 in London.  The conference offered the chance to network with LIS students, graduate trainees and mentors from the library profession.  More information will be available later in 2008 about the next student conference.

Qualifications

The Career Development Group is the only group of CILIP which caters specifically for the needs of students.  We are keen to support all students from the "traditional" undergraduate degree course to NVQ.  Methods of studying are changing with increased emphasis on part-time or distance learning and this brings its own challenges, and students can feel isolated.

The Group actively participates in the CILIP Roadshows, held at universities that offer accredited courses.  Each university offering these courses has a Student Representative, who has the opportunity to participate in the Career Development Group Student Committee.

Student Representative

Each Division would welcome a Student Representative to their committee.  Involvement in debates on professional issues is important at any stage of a career, and starting early allows you to take the experience and skills used into employment.  Equally important is the social side of the Group, and many Divisions hold informal social events as well as more formal courses.

If you are interested in more information about the Group, or about the role of the Student Representative, please contact the Honorary Student Coordinator.
