Mission statement
The Cataloguing and Indexing Group believes that the storage, organisation and retrieval of information in any form and by any means is a central and fundamental concern of librarianship and information science. This provides a means of exploiting that information (whether printed or electronic) for the maximum benefit of all users.
Aims
The Cataloguing and Indexing Group represents the interests of members of CILIP engaged or interested (in any capacity, technical or managerial, or at any level from student to senior professional) in the following areas:
- Library catalogues, databases, systems or networks
- Information storage, organisation and retrieval, whether within local or remote databases
- The production and use of bibliographic and similar tools and indexes for information recorded in any documentary, audiovisual or electronic form.
Objectives
- To promote excellence and to develop and encourage appropriate standards of practice related to the organisation, storage and retrieval of information.
- To encourage the provision of appropriate education, training and continuing professional development by maintaining close contact with educational institutions and other training agencies, including other CILIP groups; and by means of suitable courses, seminars and workshops organised by the Group.
- To provide a forum for exploring managerial and economic implications of technical developments in the field, as well as helping to provide informed technical input to managerial decisions.
- To initiate and maintain close liaison with organisations and agencies at local, regional, national and international level which will aid the furtherance of the Groups's aims.
- To encourage and ensure input by CILIP members to specific national and international standards institutions operating in the Group's fields of interest, and to seek CIG representation on their governing or coordinating bodies where appropriate.
- To advise CILIP on any matters relevant to the Groups' fields of interest.
- To improve access to information by encouraging the design of user-friendly systems based on users' needs.
- To identify areas needing research within the Group's fields of interest and to encourage or stimulate such research whether by CIG members or others.
- To disseminate information on current innovations, standards and practice within the Group's fields of interest.
- To bring together experts, practitioners and others to facilitate the sharing of experience and exchange of ideas within the Group's fields of interest.
- Within the terms of the above aims and objectives, the Cataloguing and Indexing Group sees its role as bringing together an increasingly diverse set of CILIP's members who may include:
