Library visit

CILIP Cataloguing & Indexing Group visit to The London Library, 14 St James's Square’ London, SW1Y 4LG , 14.00-16.30 on Thursday 1st May (Free).

Visit this fascinating library which is now the world's largest independent lending library. Over 95% of the collections, which now number some one million volumes, is stored on some 15 miles of open-access shelves which may be freely browsed, and over 97% is available for loan. With books dating from the 16th century to the latest publications in print and electronic form, the Library has sought to be contemporary in every age. Although concentrating on cataloguing and classification the visit will include a tour of the collections.

Contact Diane Tough, d.tough@nhm.ac.uk or 020 7942 5909, for details.

Catalogue & Index Issue 155

The CIG committee would like to apologise for the delay in producing the printed copies of issue 155 of Catalogue and Index. Group members and subscribers will know that this is the last issue to appear in printed paper form. Unfortunately some gremlins have decided to frustrate our intention to get the last issue out. When we know more
we will make a further announcement.

Meantime we hope that issue 156, which will be the first electronic only issue, will follow close behind. An announcement will be made on the CIG website and blog and any other medium we can find when the issue is available to view. Subscribers and institutional members of CILIP who have not notified our publications officer (Andrew Watson) of their wish to receive a pdf copy of the e-issue, may still do so.

Cataloguing and Indexing Group Conference 2008

ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

“Classification and subject retrieval in the 21st Century”
You can’t make a jelly without a mould.

University of Strathclyde, Glasgow 3-5 September 2008

135 years after Melvil Dewey first had the idea for his classification scheme and with the exponential growth of new information storage and retrieval systems we are still wrestling with finding the right way to get things in order- on the shelves and in those very systems – and then to enable people to find them when they search. This conference is intended to explore current developments in classification and subject retrieval. We hope to cover both the longstanding methods – such as traditional classification schemes - right up to social networking and ‘bleeding edge’ ideas. The conference will also include the CIG AGM and Annual Standards Forum.

Call for Papers
Proposals for papers are invited for the Annual Conference 2008, “Classification and subject retrieval in the 21st Century: You can’t make a jelly without a mould.” This will be a joint venture between the main and sub-groups, Cataloguing and Indexing Group (CIG) and Cataloguing and Indexing Group Scotland (CIGS). To be held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow from 3-5 September 2008.

Proposals for papers should be submitted to Andrew Coburn no later than Friday 29 February 2008. Please complete the attached proposal form. Papers should be 30-45 minutes in length. Papers will be considered for publication in Catalogue & Index following the conference. If the presentation of the paper is accompanied by a PowerPoint or similar presentation, CIG will publish the presentation on its Website.

Submissions will be evaluated by the CIG committee and notification of the selection decisions will be made during March 2008. Please note that CIG will reimburse any reasonable travel and accommodation expenses incurred by invited speakers.
