Building Better LibrariesThis event, which also included the AGM, was held at Trinity and All Saints in Leeds on 20th August 2003. It was aimed at anyone who is involved (or about to be involved) in a library building project.
Lesley Dickinson from Barnsley College spoke about the new Falcon Centre which brought together the resources of 3 separate libraries in the town centre. David Crozier from Bradford presented a very useful checklist of “top tips” to bear in mind when you are involved in a building project, based on his own experiences at Coleg Glan-Hafren in Cardiff. Janice Lavigueur, from Trinity and All Saints, described how the new Andrew Kean Learning Centre came to be built and some of the problems and pitfalls experienced. The discussion and questions which followed led to a valuable exchange of ideas, information and key tips. An overriding factor that emerged was that it is vital for library staff to be involved at every stage of planning and building. As David summed it up: “Don’t believe the ‘experts’- it’s YOUR library”.
