Winners of the Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence 2006
Emerald announces winners of
‘2006 Emerald Literati Network Awards For Excellence’
9 June 2006 – UK, Emerald Group Publishing has announced the winners of the 2006 Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence.
Membership of the Emerald Literati Network brings a host of benefits including access to the world’s leading collection of online resources for editors and authors. Members can view a conference diary, obtain guidance on writing for publication, view members’ homepages and get a regular newsletter. Founded in 1992, the Network has 38,000 active members worldwide.
Emerald is a leading international publisher of LIS and management journals. The company has publishing and sales offices in the UK, USA, Malaysia, China, and Japan and its journals and database collections are present in 96% of the world’s top 100 business school libraries. In 1996, the company was one of the first academic and professional management publishers to digitize its entire journals collection.
John Peters, CEO, Emerald Group Publishing, said: “The standard of awards this year was truly exceptional. We received 123 outstanding paper nominations and more than 260 highly commended awards. These papers were reviewed by some of the most prestigious academics in the world, so all the winners can be rightly proud of themselves. Winning an award at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence is a major accolade.”
Awards are presented in six categories:
Outstanding papers
All papers which are submitted for awards are peer-reviewed. To be selected for publication in an Emerald journal, a paper must:
Contribute something new to the body of knowledge in its specialist field;
Have excellent structure and be well written;
Contain a rigorous argument or analysis;
Further debate and discussion in its field;
Cite relevant academic works and publications.
This year’s outstanding papers included ‘Blogging as a tool: Innovative Approaches to Information Access’, which was published in Library Hi Tech News, and ‘What the hare can teach the tortoise about make-buy strategies for radical innovations’, which appeared in the journal, Management Decision. The former examines how libraries can use blogs in an imaginative and informative way, while the latter is an investigation of the complex relationship between suppliers and customers.
Papers that were highly commended by the judges this year included an investigation into consumers’ attitudes to organic food, which was published in the British Food Journal; a review of nuclear energy, which featured in foresight; and an overview of European business activity in China in European Business Review.
Leading editors
Acknowledge the high commitment editors have to their journals and their efforts to raise and maintain the standards of the journals through nurturing new authors, networking and sharing ideas with other journal editors and promoting the journal at conferences.
Amongst the 150+ editors singled out for awards were Linda Ashcroft, Editor of New Library World and Tom Redman, Editor of Personnel Review. Linda is a Reader in Information Management and has an MA in Information and Library Management from John Moores University in Liverpool. Tom is a Professor at Durham Business School, which is part of the University of Durham.
The Outstanding Service Award winners this year included Dr Ilene Rockman in recognition of her long-standing support and consistently high contributions to Reference Services Review. Dr Rockman passed away on November 26, 2005 and Emerald conferred this award with a mix of sadness and celebration of her life and work.
The Outstanding Special Issues Award recognises excellence in a journal’s special issue. This year’s winner is the European Journal of Marketing, Vol. 39 No. 3/4, for The state of research in marketing.
The Emerald Management Reviews Citations of Excellence recognises outstanding contributions from authors of exceptional papers covered in its article-review database with a Citation of Excellence Award. Just 50 articles from 15,000 article reviews added to the whole database annually are singled out for special praise and awarded a Citation of Excellence.
The ASLIB-Emerald Award, now in its fourth year, recognises the most outstanding contribution to information management good practice published during 2005 in any of the six Aslib-Emerald journals. This year’s winner is: Fast surfing, broad scanning and deep diving: The influence of personality and study approach on students' information-seeking behaviour by Jannica Heinström in the Journal of Documentation Vol 61 No. 2.
The Emerald Literati Network was formed (as the Literati Club) in 1991. It consists of all authors, editors and editorial board members who have contributed to Emerald journals since that time. Membership of the Emerald Literati Network currently amounts to over 45,000 people.
