Variety is the Spice of Life: Libraries and Information for Evidence
Health Libraries Group Conference, Belfast, 6-8 September 2004
I was lucky enough to attend this year's Health Libraries Group Conference in Belfast thanks to the support of the HLG travelling scholarship. I've got a morbid fear of being catapulted through the air in a flying tin, so I took the more leisurely option of travelling to Belfast from Liverpool by ferry and train on the Sunday. I spent this extended journey time reading through the conference programme, and deciding which of the variety of interactive, plenary and parallel sessions I would be attending.
My colleague from Liverpool John Moores University, Barbara Sen, joined me the following morning for the opening of the conference at Waterfront Hall. The conference opened with keynote speeches from Clive Gowdy and Margaret Haines, the current President of CILIP. Clive Gowdy, who is the Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in Northern Ireland, welcomed conference delegates to Belfast.
Following the keynote speeches, Barbara and I made our way up to the gallery level to join some of our fellow delegates in putting up posters. We were exhibiting two posters: one on the implications for healthcare information professionals of developments in Department of Health research governance policy; and one on developing a specialised information resource at the Windsor Clinic Alcohol Treatment Unit in Merseyside. All of the posters were displayed throughout the conference, and we enjoyed a great deal of interest and feedback about our display from delegates, especially during breaks, where this was an area where people could mingle and share ideas. Details about the posters, as well as other sessions, are available on the conference section of the HLG website: http://www.cilip.org.uk/groups/hlg/conf2004/
