Business Plan 2007-2008
CILIP’s Health Libraries Group unites all those working or interested in library and information services for medical, health, nursing and other allied health professions, in all sectors: NHS, independent, academic, voluntary, and private.
It is one of the largest Special Interest Groups (SIGs) within CILIP, numbering over 2000 members. HLG works in partnership with its sub-groups, Libraries for Nursing (LfN) and Information for the Management of Healthcare (IFMH) and the newest, HLG Wales. The main Committee meets quarterly with some of its work delegated to the Panels: Membership and Publicity, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and Policy. Membership of the Committee should reflect the membership profile and our UK-wide remit.
Mission of CILIP Health Libraries Group:
To meet the needs of all its members, including:
• Continuing professional development
• Influencing government, employers and organisations thereby contributing to better access to health information and better health care
Our key objectives, as identified in the 2005-06 Manifesto , are:
• Influence
• Inform
• Involve
Actions for 2007-2008:
In 2006 all HLG members were invited to complete the membership survey: 347 responses were received. While the majority of those who responded are aware of most of the Group’s activities and services, the actions of the HLG Committee and its panels for the coming year will be largely driven by the results of the survey, and will follow our key objectives of Influence, Inform, Involve.
INFLUENCE
To set up a Policy Panel to review and develop HLG’s policy activities, and to assist corporate CILIP in policy matters pertaining to health.
Lead: Policy Panel
To review our influencing role, both in terms of how we identify the needs of our members, gather their views and use this to influence CILIP and other decision makers.
Lead: Policy Panel
To assist in mapping and documenting the framework of healthcare policy in the UK, and the role of library and information professionals in this policy framework (as part of the Joint SCONUL/CILIP Health Strategy Group).
Lead: Policy Panel
To develop (with CILIP) a policy position on the impact of Library and Information Services on Public Health. This will be supported by an advocacy strategy. An event will be organised at Umbrella to discuss the position paper with representatives of other CILIP groups.
Lead: Policy Panel
INFORM
To continue to improve the way we communicate with our members, including ensuring all members are aware of our website, newsletter, peer-reviewed journal, Health Information and Libraries Journal (HILJ) and discussion list.
Lead: Membership & Publicity Panel
To produce a business plan and one page statement of our mission and key objectives, that will replace our manifesto.
Lead: HLG Honorary Chair
To complete the evaluation of the online HLG newsletter pilot.
Lead: Newsletter Editor
To ensure all members are aware of reduced individual subscription rates for HILJ to result in an increase of 50 individual subscribers.
Lead: HILJ Editorial Board
To investigate the feasibility of offering a mentoring scheme for HLG members (non-chartership / certification) in discussion with CILIP HQ staff.
Lead: CPD Panel
To review the production of the Core Collection of Medical Books, and other core collections, including the feasibility of producing an online-only version.
Lead: Membership & Publicity Panel
To produce a summary of committee meetings and make this available via
our newsletter and website.
Lead: HLG Honorary Secretary
To review communication to members, particularly in relation to keeping members up to date with committee developments and HLG activities, through exploring such things as RSS feeds, blogs, more active use of our discussion list, etc.
Lead: HLG Committee / Website Editor
To raise awareness of HLG and career opportunities in health information and to update the Guide to Working in Health Information
Lead: CPD Panel
INVOLVE
To appoint a named committee member, or other volunteer, to be responsible for the administration and promotion of our prizes (CPD panel to assist in judging entries)
Lead: Prizes & Awards Coordinator
To review the location of HLG events, including study days and courses to ensure a fair, but practical and cost-effective, geographical spread.
Lead: CPD Panel
To encourage participation in HLG study days and conference by carrying out a training needs survey with members, and planning programmes that map to the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework and wider members’ needs.
Lead: CPD Panel
To champion innovative ways of learning, empowering members to participate in CPD activities other than traditional study days.
Lead: CPD Panel
To encourage and support members to share information and best practice in HILJ, the newsletter and through other means of communication.
Lead: HILJ Editorial Board
To produce a simple guide of the different ways members can contribute to
group activities and developments.
Lead: Membership & Publicity Panel
To work to build the quality of the Health Library and Information Services Directory (HLISD), encouraging active participation of HLG members.
Lead: HLG Representatives on HLISD Service Board
