Critical appraisal for healthcare librarians: an interactive workshop

Healthcare librarians are in the frontline when it comes to the translation of evidence into medical practice. They are responsible both for identifying best available evidence through the application of search and appraisal skills and for developing those skills in healthcare professionals.

This workshop has been designed enhance existing appraisal skills and to look at how to facilitate the use of critical appraisal in a range of clinical settings. The format will be highly interactive, with a mix of presentations, group work and discussions.

By the end of the course participants will:
  • have a clear understanding of the following types of research:
      • systematic reviews
      • randomised controlled trials ;
      • to be familiar with the appraisal process for each type;
      • understand the fundamentals of statistics* necessary for critical appraisal;
  • be able to facilitate the development of critical appraisal skills in others.

Who should attend: Library and information staff working in a health setting or anyone involved with teaching critical appraisal skills.

Workshop attendees will be required to do around 3 hours of pre-work.

E-Learning for Healthcare Librarians and Information Professionals - 2nd November 2007

Librarians and Information Professionals in healthcare are now involved in the purchasing, promotion and user training of e-learning resources. Some of us are actually creating these resources for our varied user groups.

To better inform ourselves on what e-learning is and how we can use it effectively, HLG Wales will be holding a study day on 2nd November at the RCN in Cardiff on the theme of e-learning in all sectors related to healthcare.
