About us

The Library and Information History Group (LIHG) was formed in 1962. It is one of the Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professional's oldest special interest groups and is the only group in the UK specifically devoted to the history of libraries and librarianship.

The LIHG publishes a regular newsletter, and a scholarly journal, Library History, appears under its aegis.

The LIHG also organises seminars, conferences and visits, and seeks to support action for the preservation of library records, artefacts and buildings. Because we are a small group with no branches we hold regular meetings around the country which consist of a committee meeting, followed by a visit or lecture or both. LIHG members are welcome to attend committee meetings as observers as well as the public meetings. We are strongly committed to increasing access to resources for the library historian whether textual or artefactual. Indeed, it is often said that the LIHG represents the historical conscience of librarianship. Apart from those with a general interest in library history, members of the LIHG include practising librarians, retired librarians and students.
