There is a growing interest at an academic level in all aspects of the 'history of the book' and related disciplines. This is a journal not only for librarians but also anyone interested in social, cultural, and intellectual history. Throughout history, libraries have been the repositories of knowledge of all kinds. Without libraries, we should know nothing of former ages nor the thoughts of our ancestors. In the age of computers and the internet, a new concept has arrived in the form of the 'virtual' library: technology may have developed, but the idea of a library as a source for knowledge still survives.
Library History
is a refereed journal, publishing articles of a high academic standard. It covers all subjects and all periods relating to the history of libraries world-wide, and frequently receives contributions from scholars world-wide. Issues include substantial articles as well as book reviews and occasional surveys of recent publications and guides to relevant sources.
Library History
, established in 1967 as the journal of the Library History Group (now the Library and Information History Group) of the Library Association (now the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), is the only British periodical devoted exclusively to the study of the history of libraries and librarianship.
Library History
will be published four times per year from 2007. Each issue will contain about 80 pages as before, meaning that there will be a fifty per cent increase in the number of pages produced each year. This will be good news not just to readers but to contributors as well. This expansion reflects the considerable increase in interest being shown to the study of library history in recent years, partly due to the increased attention being paid to all aspects of 'book history' and also the growing number of conferences at which papers on library history are being presented.
