There have been many changes in the publication of official statistics since the development of web publishing. The Internet has revolutionised the way in which statistics are presented to the user – publications in the book sense are no longer even the primary method. The Census for 2001 is examined as are the full range of ONS figures and communications strategies. The role of the Statistics Commission is examined before investigating the direction in which publishers need to look when making figures available.

The Freedom of Information Act requires all government departments and agencies to produce Publication schemes. This day addressed the implications for the retrieval of official information in the future as well as at this stage in the preparation for implementation in 2005. Speakers from central and local government addressed the development of strategies and uses of the web in preparing and publicising plans. HMSO and TSO also outlined their role in the future, particularly in the use of Digital Object identifiers (DOIs).

Speakers from the House of Commons Library and Information Office, and from SCOOP addressed the developments over recent years which have improved the information resources offered from Parliament to the public. The way in which the Library assists Members and the public. The development of a Parliamentary website covering not just Statutes but Statutory Instruments and Select Committee proceedings were discussed prior to the visits to the House itself which could not be covered in the proceedings.

A review of the changing sources of legislation available for the UK. Electronic resources are developing and changing. New means of linking resources are revolutionising the way we access legislation and case law. A number of suppliers came together to compare their products with the expressed desires of the information professionals.

While reviewing the work of thirty years speakers were able to present many new developments and future plans to the capacity audience on this occasion. The speakers came from the SCOOP committee itself and from the House of Commons, the Bank of England, HMSO and TSO, the Department of Health, the Department of Education and Employment. Having considered the developments of the three decades the problem of archiving the present output of official publishing, largely on the web was addressed from the user and the provider standpoint. Unfortunately print cannot do justice to the amazing presentations.

This seminar was arranged with the assistance of the Information for the Management of Healthcare Group (a sub-group of the Library Association’s Health Libraries Group) and covered a wide range of topics on health and medical information and statistics. These include Department of Health publications; the work of the Office of National Statistics and the Office of Health Economics; an overview of international statistical official publications, particularly from the World Health Organisation; a report on activity at community level on health statistics; the role of both HMSO and the Radical Statistics Group; and a useful discussion on the problems of access to health statistics.

The two seminars covered in these proceedings discussed a very wide range of publications relating to various aspects of the environment and leisure. Since the two interact considerably it was felt useful to bring together some of the regularly used resources and their means of retrieval, with the more obscure, or even fugitive, ones and is itself a useful resource in an area where few guides to resources exist.
