2007
October 31 This was a joint Informal with CDG (L&SE) - the Career Development Group (London and South East) - when we met Sarah Ellis who told us about international involvement through the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) programme. Sarah was a VSO in Uganda in 2005-2006.
September 19 Collin Crooks, Information Access Manager in the Knowledge Sharing and Information Rights Team of the Department for Education and Skills (now the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF)) talked to us about the particular problems developing countries face when trying to implement Freedom of Information legislation. More later!
June 28 The presentation of the 2007 ILIG International Award to Mrs Jan Lewis for her work in Prison Libraries in Barbados was made at the Awards Dinner during Umbrella 2007.
May 16 ILIG invited Potenza Atiogbe, Deputy Head of Library Services at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. The title of her talk was 'Everyone benefits: a partnership between healthcare librarians in Uganda and the U.K.'
The Albert Cook web site was developed in 2005 as a result of the partnership between the Sir Albert Cook Medical School Library, University of Makerere, Kampala, Uganda, and Kent, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Libraries. This Informal focused on Potenza's visit to Uganda which finalised the design, content and launch of the web site. For further information go to the Partnerships in Health Information (Phi), website.
February 21 For the first of the new style Informals we welcomed Kim Sherwin, from the Joint Services Command and Staff College near Swindon, the winner of the CILIP/ESU Travelling Librarian Award, 2006. The theme was a librarian's travels. Kim was interviewed by Rachel Monk, ILIG Vice chair, on her Award - a two-week study tour of Defence Department libraries in the United States of America.
Jill Martin, CILIP's Director of Knowledge and Information, was also present to answer questions about the Award. There was also time for questions and discussion.
Those who were unable to be present can read Kim's article on pages 26-28 of Focus Vol. 38 no. 1.
