10 December The ILIG International Quiz (An ILIG Informal - but with differences!)

We celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN's General Assembly on 10th December 1948, with the ILIG International Quiz!  We also enjoyed festive refreshments!

Seven teams took part and £130 was raised for the new ILIG Emergency Fund.  This is a fund to help ILIG respond, very quickly, to requests for help in emergency situations such as natural disasters.

For those ILIGlisters who could not make it to Ridgmount Street that evening, there was a mini online quiz.

10 September  From Uganda to the UK, in Search of International Professional Development

Glorias Asiimwe, in the UK from 5th Sept -12th Oct on a study visit to a number of libraries and information centres in the UK, was interviewed by Maria Cotera on her experiences as a recent LIS graduate from Uganda and what she hoped
to achieve from this trip.

During her course in records management, Glorias has acquired knowledge and skills in cataloguing, classification, database management, automation of records using management systems and website development among others; much of the course units she has studied have been mainly theory because the school does not have adequate facilities such as computers. Glorias is hoping to acquire more practical skills as well as learning new things during her study visit to the UK.

There was time to talk to Gloria informally after the interview, and to share international experiences with other attendees over a glass of wine.

This was a joint event with CDG London & South East Divisions.

9 April Three States, Two Weeks, One Travelling Librarian

Karen Poole, from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the winner of the English-Speaking Union (ESU) and CILIP 2007 Travelling Librarian Award was interviewed on her experiences.

Karen spent two weeks in October 2007 visiting a number of health/pharmacy libraries and information centres in Washington D.C., Boston and Memphis, and says: “My trip was a fantastic opportunity that allowed me to discuss health and pharmacy information and pharmacy education in the US as well as discovering more about electronic resources and training offered by librarians to pharmacists and pharmacy students.

Highlights included a visit to the American Pharmacists Association; a day at the National Library of Medicine and visits to several academic institutions including the University of Tennessee Health Science Center library and Drug Information Center.

Also with us that evening were Jill Martin, CILIP's Director of Knowledge and Information and Gill Hale, the ESU librarian who answered questions about the Award itself.

12 March  Knowledge sharing and communicating - with remote locations! 1800 - 1945 in the Ewart Room at CILIP, 7 Ridgmount Street, London, WC1 7AE

Paul Byfield of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development told us about the problems associated with working in remote regions - in this case Russia itself, countries that had been part of the former Soviet Union and as far as Mongolia.  A report of this Informal will appear in the July 2008 issue of Focus.
