November 15 Alan Hopkinson, Head of Systems and Bibliographical Service, told us about Middlesex University's partnership with Yerevan State University Library in Armenia, and other projects which are, or have been, funded by the European Union.
October 18 ILIG Committee Meeting.
October 18 Barbara Spina, Faculty Librarian (Law & Social Sciences), Librarian (Africa) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), talked about her experiences at the International Federation of Library Associations' (IFLA) World Library and Information Congress 2006 in Seoul, South Korea. And Paul Sturges, Professor of Library Studies at the Department of Information Science, Loughborough University, and Chair of IFLA's Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE) Committee, talked about 'Soul searching in Seoul' or how he really feels about freedom of expression, illustrated by the Danish cartoons debate which took place at the IFLA Conference this year in Seoul, South Korea.
September 20 Sue Hughes talked about the International work of MLA - the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council. Sue Hughes is MLA’s International Policy Adviser. "Working internationally expands horizons, develops skills and opens up new and exciting possibilities for the sector and the people who use its institutions. MLA published its first international strategy in 2002, and we have achieved a great deal towards the report’s aims since then".
August There was, as usual, no Informal in August.
July 12 Marsha Stewart, from the Cornwall Regional Hospital Library, Cornwall, Jamaica, and winner for 2006 of the ILIG Anthony Thompson Award, talked about her library - reality and aspirations for the future - and her three, very full, weeks in U.K. This was a special event at a different venue!
June 14 ILIG’s AGM 2006 and June Informal took place between 5 - 7 pm at CILIP, 7 Ridgmount Street, London WC1 7AE.
At the AGM the first winner of the ILIG International Award, for making a difference in libraries and information services outside the UK, Khan Quay Kin, was announced. Use these links to read more about Khan Quay Kin and the ILIG International Award.
Also at the AGM were two representatives from the Government Libraries and Information Group (GLIG) to whom we presented our cheque for £636, raised at our Tsunami Lunch on 11th June.
After refreshments came the June, or AGM, Informal when Professor Ian Johnson of The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, talked about Challenges in Reconstructing Librarianship in Iraq.
June 11 : ILIG's Tsunami lunch - held in an ILIG member’s delightful garden in Brentford, near London - raised over £600 as a contribution towards the Government Libraries and Information Group's target of £12,000 to help Hikkaduwa Public Library in Sri Lanka.
May 17 Shiraz Durrani talked to us about PALIAct: A Progressive African Library & Information Activists' Group - its formation and the issues facing it. Shiraz Durrani has written an article about PALIAct in Focus Vol 37, no. 1, 2006.
April 19 Heather Lane, from the Scott Polar Research Institute - who was the winner of the 2005 English Speaking Union/CILIP Travelling Librarian Award - talked about Polar Research Organisations in the United States.
March 15 Ewa Lipniacka the Director of POSK talked about the Polish Library POSK.
February 22 Ihar Ivanou talked to us about Baltic and Slavonic Community Libraries in Britain.
January 18 Ms Maitrayee Ghosh from India, who is Commonwealth Professional Fellow Middlesex University Learning Resources, gave a talk entitled ‘Digital divide in India: Role of Consortia to bridge the gap’.
