Relocation of Ordnance Survey Historic Mapping Archive
Ordnance Survey is carrying out a programme of relocating various historic items as a precursor to the planned move to a new head office building on the outskirts of Southampton.
Many items of historical material have been deposited with The National Archives Kew, and in a number of distributed Places of Deposit, including the three GB National Monuments Records, as is most appropriate to the nature of the various materials.
These plans include preparation for the intended disposal of Ordnance Survey’s working library of past editions of Ordnance Survey mapping series. The library holds large scale mapping, Town Plans, County series etc. The maps in this library are, by definition, working maps which have been subject to the vagaries of active use and reference over many years. They are not therefore in pristine archival condition.
Those maps which contain manuscript additions will be deposited with TNA as Public Records. Other sheets, which duplicate editions in the more comprehensive holdings of Legal Deposit Libraries, will be made available to other organisations and collections. Taking advice from TNA, Ordnance Survey will compile a priority list of potential recipients. If you are interested in being added to the list of potential recipients I ask that you reply to me stating your area of interest by the 31st July 2008.
It is Ordnance Survey’s intention that the disposal will be conducted in a planned and measured way, to ensure maximum benefit is derived by recipients.
