PTEG's Mission

To promote and support excellence in the management and development of human resources throughout the library and information community.

Context

This plan has been developed in the context of the CILIP Strategic Plan 2005/06, the review of groups and implementation of the new Framework of Qualifications.

In developing our strategy, we have noted CILIP’s commitment to invest in:

  • implementing and supporting the new Framework of Qualifications
  • further development of the CILIP website
  • a new database for membership and qualifications
  • programmes on Ethics, Equal Opportunities and Information Literacy.

In planning our activities and actions over the next three years, we have also taken account of CILIP’s strategic aims and we believe that our proposed programme of work will make a significant contribution to their achievement, by:

  • enabling personal development
  • enhancing employability
  • providing leadership
  • promoting best practice
  • working effectively
  • offering opportunities for personal involvement.

Goals and Actions

Our strategic plan is organised around five overarching Goals, each supported by a set of specific Actions. This strategy document will in turn be supported by a more detailed work programme, specifying responsibilities and timescales for each action over the three-year period covered by the plan.

The PTEG Committee will monitor, evaluate, review and update this strategic plan and work programme throughout the planning period, in consultation with the membership and other key stakeholders.

PTEG’s Strategic Goals

Seminars and Workshops

Goal
Develop and deliver a UK-wide programme of events designed to meet identified professional needs within PTEG’s areas of concern.

Actions
  • Continue the roll-out of Mentor training and Fellowship workshops in various modes and to all regions in support of the new Framework of Qualifications.
  • Develop a new series of seminars/workshops dealing with key issues for line managers (eg dealing with difficult people and providing strategic leadership).
  • Follow through plans for a ‘Spice Up Your Career’ (career development event) for mid-career staff, with a view to national roll-out, possibly as a joint venture with the Career Development Group.
  • Consider offering an event designed to help members explore issues associated with the new Code of Conduct.

Information and Publications

Goal
Produce and maintain a set of regular and occasional publications to communicate with members and provide guidance on relevant professional concerns.

Actions:
  • Produce a printed Group Newsletter on a twice-yearly basis and/or to coincide with special events.
  • Produce an Annual Report/review of the year, to provide a record of activities and achievements, including a progress report on implementing our strategy.
  • Re-launch Personnel, Training and Education as an electronic journal and make (selected) back issues available online.
  • Produce a new leaflet/revised guidelines and supplementary (web-based) documentation on mentoring to support the new Framework of Qualifications and complement CILIP information.
  • Consider developing a guide/booklet for line managers to help them fulfil their role effectively, especially in relation to training and developing their staff.

Communication and Marketing

Goal
Exploit the new website to extend membership benefits and to target products and services more effectively.

Actions:

  • Develop and promote a ‘Members’ Only’ area of the website for publication of the Group’s e-journal and dissemination of papers and presentations from conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Investigate the development of a web-based database/directory of members’ interests and expertise to support the marketing of services and drafting of responses to consultations.
  • Collect and analyse website data to monitor usage of the different areas/pages and inform future provision.
  • Investigate the feasibility of offering seminars and other training/development activities in virtual (e-learning) mode.

Collaboration and Partnership

Goal:
Identify groups with overlapping and related interests and work proactively and collaboratively to achieve common objectives.

Actions:
  • Establish a network of contact/liaison people on each CILIP Branch Committee to facilitate identification of regional interests and UK-wide delivery of services.
  • Develop closer working relationships with the Career Development and Affiliated Members Groups and explore scope for collaborative activities and formal co-operation (eg joint badging and production of events and publications).
  • Consider the feasibility of PTEG becoming involved in the development of a new information literacy/information handling skills qualification (for England, Wales and Northern Ireland) in partnership with the Community Services Information Literacy Sub-group and Lifelong Learning UK.
  • Review links with groups working in related fields and consider whether there are other bodies with whom PTEG could usefully co-operate and collaborate.

Administration and Management

Goal:
Develop and expand committee guidelines and membership information to clarify roles and responsibilities, increase levels of member engagement and support succession planning.

Actions:

  • Develop new role descriptions for all group officers, committee members and the national councillor, to include contributing to consultations as a specific responsibility for all committee members.
  • Provide an estimate of the approximate time commitment (number of days per annum) required to fulfil roles.
  • Produce a master schedule showing the terms of office and retirement/review dates for all committee members.
  • Obtain and analyse membership data to establish profile and make-up of the group (by age, region, sector, etc).
