Research indicates that this is a matter of personal preference. What is important, is that a mentor is ‘someone you get on well with’.

Can my line manager be my mentor?

This depends on the nature of the personal relationship. Good managers have many of the qualities of mentors, however they must recognise that there may be conflicts of interest between their supervisory and mentoring responsibilities and between their commitment to the individual and to the organisation. Some managers could feel their authority and influence was being undermined by a mentor, from another part of the organisation.
