About the 2005 Awards
The Public Libraries Group (PLG) of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) launched the Public Library Building Awards in 1995. The awards are recognised throughout the UK and Ireland as indicators of professional library development and as benchmarks for public library facilities, reflecting the major changes in library provision in the 21st century.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the awards and to reflect changes in public library design, management and use, PLG reviewed the categories of awards. The categories no longer simply focus on the size of the library, but on areas of key importance in building practice and to users.
The new categories were:
- Partnership
Sponsored by 3M

- Architect Meets Practicality
Sponsored by Point 8

- Interior Design
Sponsored by Askews

- Heart of the Community
Sponsored by Demco

- Mary Finch Accessibility Award
Sponsored by BBC Audiobooks

- Delegates Choice
Sponsored by the Public Libraries Group
Entries for the 2005 awards had to be submitted by the 31 March 2005. The Shortlist and Longlist was announced at Umbrella 2005. The awards ceremony was held during the PLA Conference 2005.
