Over 250 school children recreate the cramped conditions on board the slave ship Brookes, based on a print circulated in abolitionist literature in the early 19th century (below). They were taking part in a project commemorating the bicentennial anniversary of the passing of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act organized by Durham University Library in July, highlighting the inhuman treatment of captives on the voyage from Africa to North America.
