Images from Cambridge University Library's current exhibition - Through the whole island (17th July-22nd December) - on travel and tourism within the British Isles from the 16th century onwards. (Above) The perils of overcrowding, a coloured aquatint from Poetical sketches of Scarborough (London, 1813). (Below) One of many booklets produced by the GNR to promote tourism (London, 1903). The exhibition uses the various products of such travel, whether diaries, literary works, scientific documentation, political enquiry, or commercial literature, to explore the relations of Britons to the landscapes in which they live.
