Leeds University's Art Gallery re-opened, much improved, on 5 March as the Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery. Its new name acknowledges the major benefaction that has enabled the Gallery's revitalisation. Fittingly, the opening exhibition includes works by many artists associated with the University, including Maurice de Sausmarez's painting of the bar at Whitelock's pub, tucked away in the heart of Leeds. Whitelock's is legendary as the haunt of artists and writers active in Leeds in the decades following the Second World War. They included the University's remarkable succession of Gregory Fellows in Painting and in Sculpture, who feature in the exhibition, and Gregory Fellows in Poetry. The poets are among the subjects of Leeds Poetry 1950-1908, an AHRC-funded project to catalogue and contextualise the wealth of relevant archives in Leeds University Library.
