RBSCG Conference Bursaries 2008

The Rare Books & Special Collections Group proposes to offer up to three bursaries to allow three people to attend the annual study conference organised by the group for its members.

The Conference will take place in Edinburgh from the 10th to 12th of September 2008, on the theme ‘Imprenting within our Realme: Books from Scotland’.

The bursary award comprises free attendance at the Conference, including the conference dinner, and up to £100 towards the cost of two nights’ hotel accommodation (B&B) at a suitable location in Edinburgh.

The Conference provides an opportunity for specialists in the management of research collections to meet and exchange expertise and insight. It is anticipated that those taking advantage of a bursary award will attend for the full conference programme, to maximise the benefit to be gained from this opportunity to make connections with other members of the profession. It is also expected that bursary holders will write a report on aspects of the conference for the publication in the ‘Rare Books Newsletter’. They might also be approached by the conference organisers for other assistance should this become necessary.

Candidates for the bursary should be those paid up members of the CILIP Rare Books & Special Collections Group who are either students or have only recently started a career working with special materials.

Applicants for the award should write in the first instance to the Hon. Treasurer of the Group, Adrian Edwards, c/o British & Early Printed Collections, The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB before the 1st of July 2007. Please quote your CILIP membership number and provide a short outline (under 300 words) of the ways in which attendance at the conference will benefit your career.

For administrative purposes, candidates for the bursary should apply for a place at the conference in the usual way, marking the application ‘Bursary Candidate’. A place will then be held open for booking in the usual way, should an unsuccessful bursary applicant wish to attend the conference as a self-financed delegate.

The decision of how many bursaries to award, and to whom they will be offered, rests with members of the Rare Books & Special Collections Group Committee. All applicants will be notified of their success or otherwise in July 2008.

Further information about the Conference itself can be found on our website.
