CILIP Carnegie and Greenaway Medals 2003
CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Award Ceremony held on July 9th 2004 at The British Library.
Many of you will have read Jennifer Donnelly’s acceptance speech in CILIP Update, but I believe that as these awards are CILIP’s and especially YLG’s, members should be given the chance to also ‘hear’ what their CILIP President, Margaret Haines, and National YLG Chair, Colin Brabazon, had to say on the day. Margaret surprised me by informing us that not only had she read the Shortlisted books, but had encouraged her staff to join in an official shadowing group. Colin’s speech was equally insightful as he celebrated the wide range of people (children and young people included) who made the judging process possible. He also reminded us that the process was capable of evolving “without losing sight of the medals’ prime aim, to reward excellence…”. I do hope you enjoy reading these speeches and are as inspired by them as we were on the day, and for those of you who haven’t read Jennifer’s wonderful acceptance speech, or have mislaid that copy of Update, I have included it here for you.
