A conference for all those interested in children’s and young people’s books, reading and libraries

2008 is the National Year of Reading – what better time to celebrate the diversity and richness of our reading culture for children and young people? Alongside this we must consider how 21st century technologies can help us reach more of our audience and engage them in both using and helping to shape our libraries.

2008 also saw the launch of the National Youth Libraries Board offer - developed as a result of consultation with young people from across the country about what they want and expect their local library to provide, and giving services a blueprint from which to grow.

This conference is about exploring how we can use new technologies, blending with and supporting tried and tested methods, to reach out to our audiences – new, emergent and established - and to enable their reading lives to grow with them as their needs and wants change through their lives. This conference is about sharing ideas and practices which have worked so that all our audience can share in the enthusiasm and benefits from reading and libraries.

Confirmed speakers to date include Honor Wilson-Fletcher, Director of the National Year or Reading, Gary Wilson consultant on Raising Boys Achievement, John Agard, poet and authors Michelle Magorian, David Almond and Polly Dunbar as well as a varied and exciting programme of workshops.

The Youth Libraries Group’s conferences have been running for over 50 years. During that time our conferences have built up an excellent reputation for being friendly, informative and enjoyable. We aim to provide the opportunity for you to explore the impact of new developments, engage in stimulating discussion, meet new and well-loved children’s writers and illustrators and network with colleagues, so that you leave enthused, reinvigorated and with a host of new ideas.
