This practical introduction to DDC22 is designed to give a sound working knowledge of Dewey, from basic navigation of the scheme and simple number allocation to the building of complex notation.

Benefits of attending
Having completed the course participants will be able to carry out simple classification with Dewey, recognise built numbers and be able to build notation to describe subjects appropriately.

By the end of the event participants will:
  • be familiar with the strengths of Dewey
  • have practically reviewed the basic aspects of Dewey
  • be able to carry out classification using Dewey

Who should attend?
Any information workers who are required to use Dewey and want to know how. Information managers who wish to classify information and have no experience of classification schemes. Suitable for those needing a refresher in Dewey.

Special notes: participants are asked to bring along either volume 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 of Dewey 22 where possible.

  • Mr Dewey and his wonderful invention
  • What happened at Amherst College in the later part of the nineteenth century that would have such a major impact on library organisation?
  • Basic navigation: the Index and the schedules and the manual
  • Finding your way securely round the four volumes that make up the classification scheme and locating simple subjects
  • Tackling the Tables: standard subdivisions 
  • First stage in number building, taking a schedule number and increasing its precision by specifying further details 
  • Tackling the tables: place and time
  • Geography, history and adding geographical detail to a schedule number 
  • Building numbers within the schedule
  • You can add one section of the schedule to another – if you are told you can and if you know how to!
  • Plenary session: open session for further questions
