The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) have become the de facto form of language-based subject access for libraries. Since their adoption by the British National Bibliography they have spread widely into public and academic libraries. As they are part of the core bibliographic format they have become ubiquitous on imported MARC records.
Benefits of attending
The day will provide a background to the origin and evolution of this format, with exercises in:
- building simple and complex subject headings
- the significance of pattern headings
- using LCSH in MARC 21 bibliographic format
The use of the MARC 21 authority format for LCSH will be examined as a means to maintain coherence in the use of headings in your database. The day will close with the implications of cooperative work undertaken in America (SACO) to sort out this vast maze of subject terminology.
Who should attend?
Library and information workers who have to deal with Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), either in the context of data creation or data import.
It will also help data managers who are considering migration to a new data management system and taking on LCSH as the language based subject access system for their data.
Special note:
The course is not suitable for anyone who is new to cataloguing and classification.
